If you go down to the woods today (or Parklife's a Blur)

If you leave aside my ignorance of contemporary pop music (when was the last time I was in the UK and listening to Radio 1?) you may be able to guess from the title of this missive that something is afoot in the park - well, apparently about 11 foot and in several of London's Royal Parks.

Our friends elephant family begin their willow topiary Trunks Meet Trunks campaign today with the cooperation of the World Land Trust and London's Royal Parks Foundation to highlight the need for creation and preservation of wildlife corridors for all wildlife but particularly for Asian Elephants and specifically for this campaign in India.

Wildlife corridors are an issue in Thailand too for our wild populations, both those based in Khao Yai and surrounding wild areas and in the Western Forest complex running down almost all of our Western border with Burma - whilst there is contiguous forest down a lot of the border a lot of it is un-protected or, in the case of Burma, a conflict zone.

Similarly on the Laos border, it looks as though we are in danger of falling into the trap of protecting our islands of forest and World Heritage Sites and leaving the corridors to be protected by our neighbours - the cross border approach is a wonderful one but only works if both sides are pulling their weight.

It also leaves one with a wonderful scapegoat should the approach fail.

PS.  That they chose Pumpui's official birthday to start their campaign is probably a complete coincidence, but it just gives us yet another excuse for a party!
