Enlightened kids and another new species (Yonok Wetland Project)

Dowroong and Mick of the Yonok Wetland project have been steaming ahead with the project to conserve the remaining unprotected areas of the Yonok Wetland - leaving the rest of us in their wake!

At the request of the monks and without waiting for us to secure them a wage their Saturday schools in the local temples - curriculum: Conservation with an English hook (as opposed fishing hook, I guess - though we are actually trying to promote the use of hooks rather than kill 'em all modern fishing methods) - have started with a bang.

Walks through this part of rural Northern Thailand, visiting the villages, the buffalo camps, getting in some relaxed or some hard core birding and even taking part in the Saturday English lessons can be arranged through the Front Desk at Anantara.

Though Dowroong and Mick are providing momentum of their own your support, both financial - we ask each group to contribute a total of 1,000 baht directly to the various stakeholders and inhabitants of the wetland as well as the money for your guided walk that goes into the project fund - and moral will be vital for keeping this project afloat.

   Over to Dowroong and Mick:
_______________________________________

We had 112 mostly teenage children for teaching in the two Temples on Saturday.
Seems they are happy with us. Dowroong and the Monk at Ba Mak Noi have asked the children to bring a tree each, when they come to see us on Saturdays.

I am going to stick to the Temples, I trust them and they are keen to make the signs for the "No Hunting".

Dowroong is keen to pay people who work for the project and we need to start talking to people we can directly involve in this project.

Dr Mong (Lanna Bird Club) gave us a 3000 baht donation towards the cost of the "No Hunting" signs.

Birds:

River Tern; returned yesterday 30th; possibly not the same bird,
Grass Owl; 3-5; Lt England; 29th
Hooded pitta; 8 holding territory; 29th; is a new species for this area.
